American Football
The University of Lincoln Colonials were formed in 2005 and play in the BUAFL University leagues. As such, the team line-up regularly against University sides from across the country in this high octane contact sport which is not for the faint hearted. While on the gridiron rivalries may be fierce, off the field the Colonials provide an excellent chance to meet new friends through a range of social activities and events such as the ‘Superbowl party’.
Badminton (men’s and women’s)
The Athletic Union boasts both men’s and women’s competitive Badminton teams which each play in the BUCS leagues. The teams are an integral part of the AU as they play competitively but they are a team that welcomes players who are both keen to compete and those who just want to play socially.
Basketball (men’s)
The men’s basketball team has been one of the University of Lincoln’s most successful sides over recent years. As well as competing in the BUCS university leagues the team also enters county competitions and has lifted the county cup on a number of occasions in recent years. As effective off the court as they are on it, the team boast a lively social side too and are always at the centre of campus action.
Basketball (women’s)
Last year the Athletic Union re-launched what has historically been one of its most successful sides, the women’s basketball team. A great way to be part of a team, and with the men’s team in tow, part of a great social scene the women’s basketball team offers a perfect way to sample what being part of a club or society is all about. The women’s side competes regularly through the BUCS university leagues.
Canoe and Kayak
The Canoe and Kayak Club at the University of Lincoln has been active for a number of years, going on regular excursions across the region and beyond. Originally more of a social society, the club has branched out in recent years and now competes in inter-university competitions. The club still boasts an active social side and has also done their bit for the environment, conducting a clean-up of the Brayford Pool area.
Cricket
The Cricket Club had its first season last year and it was hugely successful. The 2nd team were undefeated, winning all six games and securing the league title as well. They are looking to build on this fantastic first season and move swiftly up the leagues and make cricket at Lincoln a force to be reckoned with.
Football (men’s)
Although formed just a decade ago, the men’s Football Club has already developed into one of the highest ranked university football clubs nationwide. The first team competes in the Premier Division, putting the University of Lincoln on a par with the more established sporting universities such as Loughborough and Leeds Met. The club has five teams, each of them playing within the BUCS leagues on Wednesday afternoons, and train predominantly on Monday evenings. As well as regular post-match nights out, the club hosts a number of social events throughout the year.
Football (women’s)
The University of Lincoln Women’s Football Club is one of the longest running sports teams at the University. They play on a Wednesday afternoon, competing against other universities from across the Midlands; last year they won their league, securing promotion. Although a competitive club, the women’s team is welcoming to any girls who want to have a kick-about, even if you have never played before. So long as you are up for having a laugh and meeting new people, you’re welcome to come and join in.
Futsal
Futsal is a version of five a side football originating in South America. Usually played indoors it uses a smaller heavier ball than normal football. The University of Lincoln Futsal Society was set up in 2006. Having gained fifty members in its first year and with its first team ranked sixth in the country the Futsal Society won the Athletic Union’s Best New Society Award in April 2007. On gaining this award the Futsal Society was given club status last year and continued its good run of form where it got through to the national finals of the University Futsal Championships. This year the society hopes to get even more people involved, so if you want to meet new people, hone your football skills or just have fun, Futsal could be the way forward.
Gaelic Football
A traditional Irish sport, Gaelic Football is perhaps best described as a cross between football and rugby. Played by a fifteen man team it is a fast and physical sport and great fun too. The University of Lincoln Gaelic Football Club was formed in 2006 and reached the quarter finals of the National Championships in its first season. If you want to get involved, don’t worry, experience isn’t necessary. Just come down, give it a go and you won’t regret it.
Golf
The University of Lincoln Golf team has been one of the institution’s most successful sides in recent years with the first team competing in the very top division of University golf for the third successive year. Golf is the only official mixed sport in the University programme with men and women competing side by side. As such the club is open to both male and female players who are keen to develop their game and enjoy the nineteenth hole as much as the previous eighteen.
Hockey (men’s and women’s)
The men’s and women’s Hockey Club is run collectively, helping to create a very social and friendly atmosphere amongst all of the players. With six teams in total, the club is one of the largest at the University of Lincoln and has a very active social scene. Each team competes in the BUCS leagues on Wednesday afternoons, and the team also has strong links with Roses Hockey Club, enabling members to also play in local leagues. The club trains on Mondays and is open to anyone wishing to continue developing their skills, or those interested in trying the sport for the first time.
Inline and Ice Hockey
The Inline Hockey Team plays in the BIPHA North East league; this is against other University teams. The Ice Hockey Team is Joint with the Nottingham Universities and plays in BUCS. Both teams offer a great chance to meet new people with similar interests, as they are a team who like to socialise together outside of training.
Karate
The Karate Club is one of the Athletic Union’s longer running groups and has been a feature at the University for over five years. The club trains regularly, enabling members to develop their skills with the supervision and guidance of expert coaches. The club welcomes both male and female members of all abilities, with the more established competitors given the opportunity to compete in University competitions.
Netball
The Netball Club is one of the most popular groups within the Athletic Union, with three active teams regularly taking on other institutions in both league and friendly competition. As well as competing and training regularly on the court, the club has a very active and spirited social side to it. The club hosts regular social nights, allowing you to get to know your team-mates informally; with fancy dress likely to be a factor more than once during the season.
Rugby League
The Rugby League team is one of longest running clubs on campus, and has just complete its most successful season ,winning Midlands ‘A’ without losing a single game. The team competes in the Student Rugby League on Wednesdays, and trains up to three times a week. Not just about the Rugby, the club values socialising and team bonding just as highly as the game itself and holds regular social nights and events. The team is always looking for new members and is open to all, whether it’s for the rugby or the socials.
Rugby Union (men’s)
One of the most prominent on campus, the Men’s Rugby Union Club has enjoyed success both on and off field. After 07-08’s excellent season, the 1stXV are primed for promotion, whilst the 2ndXV also enjoyed a successful year. The guys combine a professional attitude with a spectacular social streak, meaning that whether you are an international or novice, all levels of ability and commitment are welcomed, right down to the Rugby Appreciation Society!
Rugby Union (women’s)
The University of Lincoln ladies rugby team is a dedicated group of students who love the sport and have put in a lot of time and effort to establish their club. They are a lively bunch of girls always looking to have a good time, on and off the pitch. If you’re intimidated by the contact aspect of the sport, don’t be, as there are many levels of ability on the team and ultimately they are just looking to have fun.
Rowing
The Rowing Club has been established for 3 years and trains at Lincoln Rowing Club. They compete regularly through both BUCS and local rowing events. Training occurs regularly throughout the week, both on and off water. The club proudly took part in the Varsity last year against our rivals Derby. All are welcome whether you are an expert or a complete novice.
Snow Sports
LUSST, Lincoln University’s Snow Sports Team has been an active part of the Athletic Union for a number of years. The club boasts a large social network and hosts regular events and get-togethers for its members. LUSST can also be found ‘on the Piste’ on a regular basis, making regular excursions to the Xscape Centre in Castleford.
Squash
The Squash club provides an opportunity for players of all abilities to learn and practice squash. The squad ranges in standards from beginner to experienced, with plenty of opportunity for coaching. The team is also split into competitive and non-competitive groups, allowing players to play for fun or play to represent the University.
Surfing
The Surfing Society was founded three years ago and offers the perfect escape from your day-to-day university life. The Society makes regular trips to Cayton Bay near Scarborough for both newcomers and the more established surfers. Away from the waves the society is just as active, offering camping weekends and other social events not to mention its own range of society merchandise. The Society has an action packed minisite on lincolnsu.com which has won awards.
Tennis
The University of Lincoln’s tennis side plays within the BUCS leagues. The club has both male and female teams and welcomes players whether they are novices, experienced or somewhere in between. It’s great fun and a brilliant chance for you to play one of Britain’s favourite pastimes.
Volleyball (men’s and women’s) The University of Lincoln Volleyball Club was formed three years ago and has gone from strength to strength in that time. The club enter men’s and women’s teams in the University BUCS leagues and plays against a variety of other universities. With both the men’s and women’s teams, the club welcomes members of either sex and of any ability. With an active all round social side the society has been a big favourite amongst the university’s international students.
