Societies Spotlight is...
The Islamic Society.
The vice president of the islamic society, got in contact with me recently in regards to the suspected terrorist attack that happened on boxing day. It was really nice to here from students who wanted to stand up for themselves and let other students know what there veiw and opinions are on items that might affect our students directly. Maryam Saghir is coming to talk at the next societies council, to explain and clear things up with other committee members from other societies.
In regards to the agenda the Islamic Society would like to talk about what happened on Boxing Day ragarding the suspected terrorist attack on the American Airline. Umar Faroak Abdulmutallab who is the suspected terrorist. He was the President of the Islamic Society at UCL (Univeristy College of London in 2006/2007 which has clearly brought a spotlight upon all Islamic Socities in UK universities.
There are few things I'd like to discuss:
1. Reassurance of the Islamic Society's form stance on condeming violent terrorism.
2. Reminder fo the the Islamic Society is there for and the work which we have done e.g Interfaith Week etc. Also talk about Islamic Awareness Week which is a major event happening throughout the UK.
3. Outline concerns regarding the welfare of Muslim students: the university must not allow Muslim students to be spied on or'criminalised' following this incident. What practical strategies can be put in place to ensure that Muslim welfare is being protected (training for SU staff on Islamophobia etc).
4. Extend an invatation to build a relationship of trust, open communication and mutal cooperation.
5. Request that the University and Students Union keep the Islamic Society informed and involved in all policy discussions relating to Muslims students.
