W/C 1st March

Busy week!  Obviously we've had elections for most of the week, so that's what our time has been spent on.  We've been out on campus promoting the elections including ballot boxes at Riseholme, TPH and Holbeach aswell as having voting stations in the Atrium.  We've had a massive turnout, way up on last year, and results are announced tonight at 9pm in the Tower Bar.

Alongside the elections, I've been up to Hull campus to discuss what's going on up there and also going through SUEI (an evaluation of the SU's activities) which looks to see the extent to which our activities benefit students.

Jan & Feb 2010

Happy New Year!!!...  I know, I'm about 2 months too late.

Wow, what a busy couple of months, seems like no time since christmas!

Over the last few months we've been up to all sorts.  We've had two housing fayres (1 in the Engine Shed, 1 in the Tower Bar)  plus we've got another one on Tuesday 9th March (Tower Bar, 4pm) so if you haven't found somewhere yet, come and have a look.

Alongside housing, we've had the SU's Higher Education funding campaign (Ven'debt'a).  The campaign included various elements such as 'University Challenged' (in association with Bishop Grostestte) ... we won!  We also had a debate with the prospective parliamentry candidates in the LPAC, a flash mob in the atrium and a protest on the High Street.  Although it took a lot of organising, they were great events.

And now, we're into elections.  This takes up the vast majority of our time during February.  For more information, visit www.lincolnsu.com/elections

Week 10 - W/E 6th December 2009

Back to another busy week!

Two main things have been going on this week; the University's Ofsted inspection at Riseholme and the SU's Sexual Health Week!

Ofsted seemed to go pretty well, the inspectors were here Tuesday and Wednesday and spoke to various students and staff regarding the improvements the University have made since their last inspection in May.

Our Sexual Health week was also going on at the same time.  We had Chlamydia testing around campus on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday with nearly 200 students being tested on the Wednesday alone.

On Wednesday night we were out in force with our condoms and free prizes in the Engine Shed with a 'got a condom? get a prize' competition.

We've also had our Little Black Book of Sexual Health produced, which has loads of information in about Contraception and STIs.  If you haven't got yours yet grab a free copy from the SOAP Centre.

Our RAG Committee also held a 7 Deadly Sins Fashion Show in the Tower Bar on Wednesday evening to help raise money for Positive Health Lincolnshire; a chairty which supports people affected by HIV/AIDS.  Want to get involved in raising money for charity? Join RAG, email Kayleigh Valentine on societies@lincolnsu.com for more info!

So, on top of this, we've had meetings of the LGBT Committee and the Postgraduate & Mature Students Committe, both of which went really well and a meeting in Hull looking at what's going on at our Hull Campus.

Week 9 - W/E 29th November 2009

Well following the last few manic weeks, this week has been a bit steadier.

I've been up at Riseholme quite a bit this week; Ofsted are inspecting next week so I've been making sure that everything on the SU's action plan such as Riseholme FE Student Experience are all O.K.

We've also had various discussions around the future of the R-Bar and the consultations that the University are planning with students.

Finally we sent 5 students off to NUS's LGBT Activist Academy, training our students to campaign on issues affecting LGBT Students.

Week 8 - W/E 22nd November 2009

Well, following on from last weeks busy week, this one hasn't been much quieter.

Tuesday was the Union's Annual General Meeting.  Policy was passed on the Union's registration as a charity; a motion regarding accommodation accreditation, something which I have already been working on quite extensively over the past few months; and a motion to restructure the Executive Committee for the next academic year.

 In preparation for this, Myself, along with some of the other officers took voting to our other campuses via proxy votes.  We headed off to Thomas Parker House, Greestone House, Chad Varah and Riseholme to collect Proxy Votes from students; giving them for the first time the opportunity to vote in the AGM.

Following on from visiting the campuses around Lincoln I spent Thursday at our campus in Hull talking to students about the problems they are facing with placements.

Week 7 - W/E 15th November 2009

6 working days, across 5 different campuses makes for a busy, busy VP Welfare & Liaison!

looking at:

Greestone's Coffee Shop - it's coming back;
Chad Varah's Common Room;
Riseholme's Bar & Bus;
Hull's Graduation Ceremonies & Learning Resources;
Holbeach's Hidden Course Costs, Distance Learners & their 2nd 'Welcome Week' in January;
Brayford's Halls of Residence, Housing Accreditation, Housing Fayre & possibly some Specialist Advice Services;
And Everywhere's Liberation & Sexual Health...

On top of all that, developing a cross union approach to the Top-Up Fees review with Bishop Grosseteste, the Sports & Societies Talent Show, LGBT Committee and Student Council!

This is what I signed up for! :D

Week 6 - W/E 8th November 2009

Summer Blog

Thursday 2nd July 2009

It’s only Thursday I know but I thought I would do this now as I’m going to be really busy tomorrow.
Today has been the first day in the office and its been a kind of sort out day.  The boring stuff like sorting through my filing cabinet and seeing what ‘little surprises’ Vicky has left for me ☺
Monday & Tuesday we spent out of the office doing loads of team building, looking at our plans for the year ahead and some finance training with an external trainer which was interesting. Then on Wednesday we spent the day at Riseholme with the staff team and the Engine Shed staff looking towards the year ahead, how we can work together, and how we can best work for you guys, the students.
I’m really looking forward to tomorrow though.  I have a few meetings in the morning but then I’m off to the Showground for the Annual Riseholme Prize Day.  It will be great to see everyone getting their prizes for their achievements over the past year, and hopefully the weather will stay nice for it.
Anyway, that’s it for this week!

Wow, What a week!

This week seems to have flown by. What with a diary full of various meetings and events along with the first meetings of two of our Student Council Sub-Committees its been pretty manic.

The first half of the week I've been flitting around campus from one committee meeting to the next.  The first meeting of the University's Mature Students' Working Group, this looks into the specific issues facing mature students.  This week I have also been to the University’s Equality & Diversity Committee, and took two students along to the Disability Equality Scheme meeting to represent your views.

Along side these we've also had our regular liaison meeting with the University where we discussed the issues affecting you on the ground.  Issues like the Riseholme Shuttle Bus and Greestone's Catering Facilities.

On top of all these University meetings, we also held the first meetings of the LGBT Committee and the International Students' Committee on Monday & Tuesday retrospectively.  They both went really well with us getting a huge amount of information on the issues which are currently affecting students from these minority groups,  these will hopefully lead to things like a donation not discrimination campaign, highlighting the injustice that gay and bi-sexual men can't give blood.

Monday also saw the Student Quiz in the Tower Bar which this week was themed around Black History.  We were there, taking part (we didn't do very well) and also collecting money for Sickle Cell Society, a charity which provides care and information for sickle cell sufferers (a disease which affects black people).

On top of all that, I've been working on reviewing our marketing that went out to students at the start of the year, how was it? too little? too much? let me know.  I've also been supporting the Afro-Caribbean Society in putting on their Black Tie Event for Black History Month. (it's on the 27th by the way) and making sure everything’s sorted for next week as I'm off to NUS's Society & Citizenship, and Welfare Zone Conferences in Manchester from Sunday to Wednesday... busy times!
