► President

Another busy month at ULSU!

Sorry for the lack of previous posts, the past two weeks have crazy with meetings and conferences away from the office.

The Union held its first Volunteer Awards, which ended up being a huge success. A big thank you to all that attended, you guys are real stars and help make your Union work better for you -The photos can be found on the SU website photo gallery.

No doubt you all have your heads in some form of text book, I remember it well!

I’m currently working on a couple of projects to do with the Student Experience, such as student part time employability, careers and sport development.

Your SU President - Chris Charnley

Key Aims

A strong advocate of the student experience, Chris is working on the development of University
services and faculties by being heavily involved with the development of the university shop,
library services, cross campus academic buildings and the review and development of the
University Accommodation Scheme 2010/11.
Alongside this, Chris will be working to support Student Council and its subcommittees to ensure
a higher level representation of all students whilst increasing accessibility to the Students’ Union and the services it provides. Overall, Chris in support of the Union Executive Committee will try their hardest to ensure the beststudent experience for all students here at the University of Lincoln, everyone should feel proud of their time at University.

What does being President mean?

The role of the President of a Students’ Union is one of a leader and figure head, whilst providing support and coordinating the Union Executive Committee by ensuring they are all fulfilling their obligations to students in their respective remits. The President, as part of his role also works incredibly close with the University and wider community to ensure the student voice of Lincoln is represented, heard and acted upon on a regional and national scale. The day to day duties of the President are always very different each day, attending senior meetings, talking to students, meeting with the Vice Chancellor, representing student concerns, alongside the running of the Union.

The Manifesto

Please find below, Chris Charnley's manifesto to the student body of Lincoln:

As a candidate for President, I’m an undergraduate in Public Relations and an active member the Students’ Union as a course Rep and as the Deputy Editor of Bullet Magazine.

As a student, I feel that the team within the Students’ Union this year has lacked the drive and ambition to appeal to the student body. With a clear break down in representation and communication this year, the SU faces its hardest year yet trying to recapture the interest of students, more importantly having a strong enough President to ensure the student body is well represented and the voice of the students can finally be heard!

If elected President I plan to work with SU officers as a team!  To help run the SU with one clear aim - the benefit of the student body. At the moment, I feel that some of the current issues that need addressing are below – my pledges to the student body.

The Student Voice

Due to poor representation and bad leadership, the Students Union is out of touch. If elected I plan to work with students, societies, teams and council on a daily basis. Providing an open door policy and regular drop-in sessions across all campuses, not just the Brayford Pool.  Addressing your issues and concerns will help us do our job better. There should be greater student input into student events. In recent weeks I have worked with students to help set up a graduation ball committee to allow greater student input into student events. A small step forward - the Student Voice must be the priority of all!

The University Shop

This needs to be more accessible to students, a bigger space offering a wider range of products and services, at great prices.  These facilities should be the centre point for students, created for that reason only.

The Library

The Library and its resources aren’t available to all students when needed. I believe it’s important that the Library reflects this, presenting opportunities for students to study at more suitable hours with a variety of resources. We need to find out what students want: a library that’s 24 hours or a mixture of more suitable opening hours with better resources, e.g. E-books and journals.  The December pilot was a great success; so let’s make it happen again.

The Engine Shed & Tower Bar (Student Centre)

The development of the tower bar take over this year with students starting to have more of an input shouldn’t stop at this! I want to develop the student involvement with the entertainments committee and student council.  More can be done with the space - it should be the centre point for all students.

Accommodation

The price of accommodation increases each year, but does the standard of living keep in line with the high prices students are paying? Only 10% of all student accommodation is checked annually by the University with standard regulations in order for a company to become credited by the University. I want to work with the University to help increase the standard, work on setting better regulations with landlords to ensure students aren’t being victimized financially, houses are to the highest standard and secure to help cut down on the high number of break-ins.

Why vote for me? Because I want to put the SU back in touch with and engage the students, it’s your Union.  The student body needs a strong president to lead the SU to be successful and make the changes you need today, not tomorrow. It’s my pledge to you, that if elected I promise to be the president you all want and need.  It’s your Union, don’t allow your experience at University to suffer any further – Make your VOTE for CHRIS.

Week Ending 16th April

Hello,

Just wanted to say a quick hello this week. I wasn't meant to be in the office due to annual leave but had to sort some last bits out for NUS Conference and the Voter Registration Campaign next week.

Officers will be out on campus next week also in the atrium making a big push, so if your stuck or unsure then pop down from Tuesday 11:30-2pm in the Atrium and we will happily answer your questions.

I won’t be blogging next week as I’ll be taking some much needed annual leave, but keep posted for next week when I’ll be making my way up to NUS Conf with Dan D and Izzie.

Right, must dash!

Have a great weekend and see you all after NUS conference.

Week Ending: 9th April 2010

Most of my week has been spent on the Voter Registration push we are making, so please do make sure you are able to vote. Log onto www.aboutmyovte.co.uk to find out more information - it's very simple and took me two minutes.

Week Ending: 2nd April 2010

Well…it took us 4 hours but we finally got through those NUS Conference motions and I’m impressed with some of the great proposals based on both the FE and HE student experience – motions can be found on the NUS website or via my status on Facebook.

Well with it being Easter things seemed rather empty around campus, which meant I could catch up on the million and one emails I had in my inbox along with catching up on some holiday.

To give you an update on some of the things this week:

-

  •      International Students, I’ve been planning an event for the 1st of May so that International/EU students can spend the afternoon with officers and other students and their families… simply grabbing some food and relaxing  - May = the start of spring.
  • -      Sports Centre, I had a catch up meeting with the Director of Sport to see how the project for next years new pricing at the gym will work out. Although its been hard, it seems to be going well however sometimes it does feel like your coming up against a brick wall.. however, I’ll keep on going because it should be cheaper, regardless of what other gyms charge! Watch this space!
  • -       24/4 Library, I’ve had a look at the numbers for the previous two weeks and its looking good, don’t forget its back for the first two weeks after easter to.
  • -       Need a part time job or some  extra cash? As part of my new part time employability agenda within the University, students can now apply to be exam invigilators… and it pays really good – check out the jobs hop website for more info –www.lincolnsu.com/jobshop

 Week Ending: 26th March 2010

Well another week has flown by at Lincoln SU.

This week I’ve been working on a wide range of projects, along with meeting the Vice Chancellor to discuss concerns relating to the Riseholme student experience, or simply put… the lack of – However, developments will be made over the summer.

Accommodation is currently at the top of my agenda as its one of the biggest financial commitments for students and the University courts is highly over priced. I will be looking to hit up courts around the 20th April with a camera and survey to gain as much written feedback from you guys about how poor the standard is and what the University can do to make it better for you guys… so watch this space!

I’ve also made my nominations for the SU Volunteer awards ... did you? I’m excited to see how this develops over time, it really is about time we thanked those shining stars that really go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the best for students.

This is a slightly short but sweet post, but I just wanted to make sure you guys had an idea what I’ve been up to. Those who want to know more can add me on Facebook – ULSU Prez and see my day by day break down.

Have a great weekend.

Week Ending: 20st March 2010

Well this week has been as hectic as most with trying to catch up on a large number of projects since my time away for the elections. To keep you informed of what I've been up to this week, find below a list of meetings and some outcomes for you guys!

1. Riseholme – Service Development ‘R-Bar’

a. After some concerning discussions with DD I sent an email regarding the Union’s concerns over the lack of strategy and vision for our Riseholme Campus, which I will be discussing with the Vice-Chancellor on the 25th March.

b. Reviewed social spaces at the campus, and we now have a brief for developing the R-Bar. Pushing ahead for approval and investment with DD, SG & MC.

BENEFIT FOR MEMBERS: The development of the Riseholme student experience, along side the development of a much needed new ‘social/study’ area.

  •   International Students
  • A post Election catch up was held with myself and the International Office to discuss the end of year International ‘goodbye’ event to be held by the Union.
  • Further discussions will be had over the coming months around Freshers’ Week and International Representation to the University for the year a head.
  • - I have also been supporting students with their applications for further study at the University by providing character references.
  •  Student Representation Building Projects:
  • Human Performance Centre Client Group
  • Business & Law Client Group
  • Both projects are making group progress. Chris Farrell has stood down for the HPC project group to allow Ben Branch (sports student & council member) to take his seat. This will have a greater outcome for students when discussing the teaching and learning environments.

  • 4. 24/4 Library
  • The 24/4 Library has returned for another four weeks across March/April.
  • Visiting numbers have been half the number from Christmas, however the service is still being used by a high number of students. A competition to promote the extended opening hours has been launched to entice students.
  •

Please feel free to ask questions on my week by week break downs. Till next time....
