On the weekend of 17th-19th February, a selection of your University sports teams hopped onto a coach, sang some uplifting songs (I Believe I Can Fly, Eye of the Tiger – that sort of thing), and headed over to Sheffield to compete in the annual British Universities & Colleges Sport competition.
Attending were: Badminton, Fencing, Judo, Swimming, Athletics, and Karate. The days were long but ran smoothly with your teams giving it all they got. There were some victories, some losses, and a few tears, but we couldn’t have been prouder of every single person competing.
To note a few achievements: Swimming did particularly well, with Katie Maloney reaching the final rounds of her competition; Hollie Black and Victoria Green came 4th in the Kumite Karate competition; and, each team was complimented on how well they represented the University, the Union, and themselves around others.
"Our smallest people went up against other Uni's biggest people. Our less experienced people, went up against more technically proficient people. Our common sense approach went up against petty rules and inconsistencies. And we kept going forward and never backed down. Great fighting spirit from the squad in kata and kumite. No medals this time; instead, we brought home 2 badges stripped from gis, 1 broken nose, 2 concussions, 1 burst nose, 1 split lip, 1 ripped gi, 13 smiles and 1 proud Sensei. Oss to the squad!"
Once again, a huge congratulations to all competitors, you did us proud! Make sure you tag us in any pictures and updates, and we’ll be sure to follow any future competitions.
