ULSU Responds to Proposed Cuts to Student Bursaries

Thursday 4th February 2010

The University of Lincoln are exploring a number of cost-saving options after announcements from the government that funding to universities is to be cut from next year, one option that has recently been presented to the Students’ Union focuses on reducing the amount of financial support given to those students who need it most.

The University is suggesting that all bursaries be scrapped apart from those going to students in receipt of the full means-tested maintenance grant, and even those payments would be slashed from £600 to £329 – these changes would be introduced for all new students entering full time higher education from September 2010.
This means that this WILL NOT affect any current Lincoln students.

The University of Lincoln Students’ Union elected officers are opposing any moves to cut student support and unless directed otherwise by Student Council will continue to do so.

While we recognise that it is critical for the University to save money, we do not believe that cutting student support budgets so drastically is the answer, particularly when we are convinced that numerous other options have not been exhausted.

We are pleased that the University have invited us into negotiations over this and hope that they will be productive to achieve the best outcome possible for our students.

In an attempt to minimise any impact on students, the Students’ Union are suggesting a number of  measures including a hardship fund, increased student employment in the university and an attempt to reduce the rent charged by university approved landlords.

Our students will be kept informed of any developments at Student Council meetings and on our website.

If you have any direct questions, please post them on the wall of the Facebook group for a public response or contact Kayleigh Turner, Vice-President Education at education@lincolnsu.com
