Look around you.
Plastic is everywhere.
It’s in the clothes you are wearing, in the cosmetics you wash with, in the seat you are sitting on. It’s even in the tea bag you used to make your brew with this morning (it is, genuinely, I researched it!)
Plastic is a lightweight, versatile and cheap material, so it is perfect for manufacturers, but it is not the perfect material. It takes 500-1000 years for plastic to degrade. If that’s not a scary enough statistic for you, then here’s some more!
- In the UK alone, a staggering 8.3 billion metric tons of plastics have been produced since the 1950s.
- Only a shocking 9% of this amount has been recycled, with the remainder dominating our landfill sites and natural environment, including oceans.
- And as our oceans become filled with plastics, so do our marine life’s stomachs, with 1 in 3 turtles having now eaten plastic.
Here at Lincoln SU, we don’t want to stand around and watch this happen. So, we’re trying to make a CHANGE.
Here’s what we’ve achieved so far:
No non-biodegradable plastic bags to be used at the SU Freshers Fayre
No bottle-fed water coolers in the venue
SU reusable coffee cups
Phasing out the use of plastic straws across our venues
Over the years we have all developed a disposable lifestyle, picking up a coffee cup here and pre-prepared lunches there…we live disposably, but do you want to just throw away our world?
The first PLASTIC SOLUTION to plastic pollution is getting involved, in any small way. So, while we make incremental changes to reduce our plastic pollution, we’re inviting you to make those CHANGES with us and make Lincoln SU – and the world - a GREENER place to be.
