You may have seen the statement yesterday by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in regards to the COVID-19 and social distancing. The Government have increased the UK’s response by encouraging stricter measures surrounding social distancing.
These measures include advising non-essential social contact, and he urged that this should be avoided; including avoiding pubs, clubs, restaurants and theatres as well as non-essential travel for a prolonged period.
Because of the advice, the Students’ Union have taken the very difficult decision, to close all physical SU activities.
We must put our members safety at the forefront of all our decisions, with this in mind we feel we have no option but to close, the entire Students’ Union, The Engine Shed, The Barge, Tower Bar and The Swan for a minimum of the next 12 weeks. The only exception to this is the Advice Centre, which will remain functional to allow us to support students who need assistance.
Whist the Government have not mentioned how long a ‘prolonged period’ of time is, they are advising 12 weeks is a minimum for everyone including the over 70s to stay away from social places. We are therefore following this advice by supporting the government’s stance for social distancing.
This means that all with immediate effect all activities and events organised by the Students’ Union will be suspended. This includes:
All events/training sessions/sports fixtures arranged by sports team, societies and academic societies (across all locations, in SU venues, on-campus and elsewhere),
All events in the Engine Shed, Tower Bar, The Swan and The Barge including all gigs, Quack!, Bongo’s Bingo will be postponed,
All volunteering opportunities,
All School Action Days, Rep Forums etc.,
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expedition,
All physical events scheduled to take place this week for International Week,
The SU Awards, The Swannys and the Societies Showcase have been cancelled. Nominations have still been compiled and winners still be selected, certificates will be sent out and winners will be celebrated on SU social media and the website,
We understand that this will be a troubling message for our members to receive, but we want to re-assure all students and re-iterate that all decision making has been done with the wellbeing and safety of students at the forefront.
The Students’ Union Advice Centre is going to remain operational and contactable throughout this 12-week period and is still able to offer advice on academic, housing, finance and welfare issues. You can contact them via email ([email protected]) or by calling 01522 837000. In particular, we understand that some students may be under unplanned financial strain due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation. If you need support or advice, please contact the Advice Centre as support is available through the Hardship Fund and food bank.
