For those of you still wondering why your inboxes are filled with messages about GDPR and Privacy Policies, it’s because, as of May 25th, a new set of EU regulations have come into effect.
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a new set of regulations designed to keep your data safe, and to give you greater control over the personal data that organisations and businesses collect from you. From now on, businesses have to provide legitimate reasons to demand information in order to accesses services, and are under legal obligations to provide you with any records of your own data that they have collected (should you wish to ask for it). They should no longer be contacting you with any information outside of the purposes for which you’ve consented to give (e.g. passing on information to third parties).
What this means for you, however, is that you will not be able to access any of your Students’ Union’s services without expressly providing consent.
To continue using your Students' Union services, all you need to do is update a small box over on the BlackBoard site.
The process is simple, and if you want to continue to access our services (what we like to call ‘the heart and soul of the university experience’), then it’s as easy as:
- Log in to BlackBoard and click the ‘My University’ tab at the top of the page
- On the ‘My University’ page, click ‘Check my details’ in the far right hand column
- Under section 8, you will see a ‘Students’ Union’ box. Click the box and select ‘Yes’ to allow the Students’ Union to facilitate your membership
- If you wish to hear updates from your Students’ Union venues (Engine Shed, Tower Bar, The Swan), then you can also do so by selection ‘Yes’ on the ‘Students’ Union Commercial’ box
Remember, your Students' Union membership provides you access to a whole array of services. From club nights at the Engine Shed, to sports, societies, campaigns network, Freshers, Advice Centre, student democracy and representation, the SUggestions platform, Work Ready, Student Leader campaigns, and so much more.
